Vindigo Expands Platform Support; Previews
Personal Navigation Service for Internet-ready Mobile Phones at
DEMOmobile
DEMOmobile 2000, PASADENA, Calif. - Sept. 6, 2000 - Vindigo,
the leading developer of personal navigation applications for
handheld devices, today announced support for Internet-ready mobile
phones. Vindigo will preview its location-based service on this
new platform at the DEMOmobile Conference, Sept. 6-8, at the Ritz
Carlton Huntington in Pasadena, Calif. Vindigo's first product,
the company's immensely popular Palm OS-based application, continues
to be available for download at www.vindigo.com.
Vindigo is also announcing a partnership with online dining network
OpenTable (www.opentable.com). The partnership will allow Vindigo
users to perform real-time wireless transactions. Users will search
Vindigo for a restaurant and then instantly make reservations
via the OpenTable system.
"Location-based content will fuel mobile commerce and drive wireless
adoption," said Jim Forbes, executive editor of DEMOletter and
producer of DEMOmobile 2000, an IDG Executive Forums event. "Vindigo's
support of Internet-ready mobile phones is a milestone in this
process. The breadth and range of the company's partners proves
the worth and legitimacy of the wireless commerce business model."
International Data Corporation of Framingham, Mass. projects
that more than 93 million people will carry an Internet-enabled
mobile phone in the US alone by 2003. "The new version of Vindigo
brings the same first-rate content now available through the Palm
OS application to users of Internet-ready mobile phones," said
Jason Devitt, CEO of Vindigo. "This is the first wireless implementation
of Vindigo, adding the ability to complete wireless transactions
such as restaurant reservations, demonstrating the true power
and potential of location-based services. As more partners announce
support for the Vindigo platform later this year, we'll expand
both our transactional capabilities and the range of content available."
Accessing Vindigo from an Internet-ready mobile phone is as easy
as making a phone call. Vindigo's mobile phone service offers
the same timely, local information as its original version for
the Palm OS, enabling people to make fast, informed decisions
about where to eat, shop and play. The application is optimally
designed for a keypad interface and the relatively small screen
size of most mobile phones.
Current users of the Vindigo Palm application will be able to
access the mobile phone service from an Internet-ready mobile
phone using their current password and user name. New users will
select these personal identifiers directly from their phone. By
registering, users will be able to initiate transactions as well
as save favorite locations and their preferred content providers.
Availability and System Requirements
Vindigo's service for Internet-ready mobile phones will be available
in Q4 2000. To receive updates on the Beta program, go to www.vindigo.com/phone.
Vindigo's mobile phone service will be compatible with most Internet-ready
mobile phones.
