NEW YORK CITY, March 20, 2001 -- Vindigo, the leading
developer of personal navigation applications for mobile devices,
today announced the launch of its proprietary vector-based mapping
engine for Palm handheld computers.
"The Vindigo platform is specifically designed for publishing
location-based information. Our client application already allows
users to enter a location or to find their current location with
a GPS device, to search for businesses and services in the area,
and to calculate directions on the fly," said Jason Devitt, chief
executive officer of Vindigo. "Now they can also see a map of
the area. Our content partners can leverage these core technologies
to create compelling location-based services for their customers."
To see a map, a user simply chooses any listing within Vindigo
and taps the 'Map' tab. A map highlighting the user's current
location and selected destination will appear immediately. Vindigo's
vector-based maps feature several levels of zoom. A user can tap
on any street to see its name. Planned enhancements include the
ability to display all listings of a specified type within a geographic
area, as well as graphical, point-to-point routing and directions.
Vindigo users in New York, Boston, and San Francisco will automatically
receive the mapping feature the next time they sync their Palm
PoweredŌ devices. Because it leverages Vindigo's existing technology,
the new feature has little impact on the application's size. In
the near future, Vindigo will offer maps in all 20 of its existing
cities. New users can download Vindigo free-of-charge by going
to www.vindigo.com.
